We’re looking for Volunteers aged 16+ from across the UK to join our virtual crew! As a Volunteer Crewmate, you’ll join our online, teacher-led afterschool sessions to help children aged 9 to 13 develop their reading and writing skills. By championing their work and celebrating everything they do, you will help them, one-to-one and in small groups on our online platform Vedamo, to become published authors! We’re looking for people who are positive about social change and love literacy. No experience working with children or young people is necessary as full training is provided. Sessions run during term time Mon-Fri, 3:45-6:15pm.
The Literacy Pirates is a charity that takes children on voyages as readers and writers to help improve their literacy, confidence and perseverance. We are an educational, pirate-themed charity for children between the ages of 9 and 13 who are falling behind in school and have less opportunities in their personal lives to enable them to catch up. We run a fun, educational, after-school programme where we rely on Volunteer Crewmates to give our Young Pirates (the children on our programme) extra support either 1-2-1 or in small groups. We champion the Young Pirates work by publishing it in real books and hosting an actual film premiere for the short films they have created.
We provide training for our volunteers, and we will also complete a DBS for you free of charge. After completing 12 sessions with us, you will be entitled to receive a reference.
